Biography

Mike Hardin studied painting at Indiana University, The John Herron Art Institute, and The Chicago Art Institute. In the 1960s he moved to Sonoma County and fell in love with the voluptuous landscapes of Northern California.

Hardin was most influenced by the abstract expressionist of the late 1940s and the early 1950s. His style incorporated a method called “sculpting” with thin and thick layers of paint, a technique used by abstract expressionist artists. Harin used to paint on-site which emphasized the experience of the moment rather than the reproduction of scenery, his interpretation of natural landscapes emerged from broad stroked of vibrant colors.

Artist quote, “Plein air landscape painting is a timeless expression of human experience, The challenge of painting outdoors allows close, accurate aberrations of natural light and color, bu requires speed to capture the changing conditions.”
